Cover Letters for Creative People eBook Rachel Kaufman Reviews
Useless! I wasted my money. Disappointing in the extreme mostly fluffy garbage. Do not waste your money.
Tons of examples and great advice for writing non-boring cover letters. I recommend it for anyone in the journalism biz (and other fields in which originality is valued), whether just starting out or languishing in a mid-career rut.
This book has been a real help in trying to create good cover letters for creative jobs. It gives excellent information about how to properly structure your cover letters while also giving great examples of cover letters from those that got them the job to those that simply got them praise for their writing. I have to give a huge thank-you to Rachel for the wonderful advice.
Applying to new jobs is always a drag, but this book made it a bit easier for me. Business resumes and cover letters are usually boring (trust me, I'm an accountant; most of us ARE boring) but this book gave me some ideas for when I apply to jobs outside of my current career...which I am currently in the process of doing. The author provided many ideas and examples to encourage the reader to think outside the box when writing. Applying many of these principles to my next cover letter. I'm very grateful to have found this book, and I hope it helps me to land an interview...and hopefully the job of my dreams!
At last! For too long I've been shuffling through outdated and corney career advice and I am so happy to have found this book. This offers solid advice for people in all career levels, and the author smartly included relevant examples for recent grads who still don't have a ton of experience. I really wish that this kind of material would have been distributed more frequently in highschool and college, but at just $6 for a copy, there's no reason not to grab a copy and start writing cover letters that are attention worthy. I plan on getting this for my younger brother for a graduation present. This is definitely worth the read, and the nice and relaxed layout makes it easy to breeze through.
Looking back, I now wish I had read "Cover Letters for Creative People" before writing the multitude of boring cover letters I've penned so far in my professional life. Rachel's tone is entertaining and highly effective—and she'll show you, step by step, how to be bolder, smarter and more effective with your cover letters. The book is filled with real examples that will inspire you to take that extra step outside the box and shine among hundreds of other applicants.
I especially recommend this for folks in need of a hail mary cover letter. Because, sometimes, you just have to be bolder than the rest to stand out in a pile of resumes.
This book is a quick easy read which emphasizes one learning to write in their own voice. She extolls the virtue of making each cover letter something that is clear and shows why you are capable and to avoid using similar phrases that you see people use over and over. For example, I held such and such position which raised my organizational ability to meet the projects deadline. Rather than, I am organized, have time management skills, and can meet deliverables.
Overall it's a good read with some good advise. There is nothing unique presented; however, why you should write in your own voice with examples to create an interesting letter that grabs and holds one's attention is shown.
